Its THAT Easy!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
Its been over two months since I last posted an update. A lot can change in that short amount of time. This is officially my first entry in 2009, how sad is that?
Over the past few months, we have become foster parents.. to four legged kids, not the two legged variety. Basically, here's the short story of how it happened -
The night before Thanksgiving, we were going to Wally World. We drive along this windy, dark road to get there and its a road that lots of people dump trash and other crap on. In the middle of the road, looking lost, was this little shih tzu. Of course, we had to stop and get him. It was kind of funny because my husband stopped and blocked one lane and got out to chase him around the street. Poor baby was so scared. He looked like a little mop! We brought him home and named him Leif (because he kept getting leaves stuck in his hair). He was such a cute little guy, but he didn't like our small dog, so we went about finding him a new home (after searching for his previous owner).
After getting several calls, we found a couple who was interested and seemed like they may be a good fit. We went and met them and they took him in. Two days later, they called us and asked us to come get him, he wasn't working out. He didn't like their small dogs either. So, after getting him back, I remembered that my aunt volunteered as a photograher for a rescue group. I contacted her by email and asked if they would be willing to do the screening and shots and we would foster him. They met him, we filled out some paperwork, and tada, we were officially foster parents!
Leif found a great home after a few weeks and is now living with a great younger lady and he no longer has to worry about other animals taking his couch time! He's doing wonderfully.
A few days before the adoption, one of the lady's with the rescue called and asked if we would be interested in continuing to foster. We said yes, and at Leif adoption, we got Petunia, an older poodle mix.
We fell in LOVE with Petunia, she is the sweetest little girl ever! We only had her a few short weeks before she found a wonderful home with an older lady that can be home with her to cuddle all day.
Right now, we have a baby poodle, Remington. He is about 8 months old. The rescue goes to animal control shelters and looks for adoptable dogs. They found Remy on his last day, severly underweight and not properly groomed. He is an amazing dog. I can't imagine who gave him up or didn't come looking for him. Whoever it was, I'm glad they didn't. You can tell by some of his reactions that they were not nice people and that he was abused.
We are hoping to buy a bigger house in Oct/Nov and are looking for a finishable basement so we can make an actual room for our foster animals (basically a place to keep the stuff, extra kennels, and a place to quarantine when we first get them).
We have met great friends in this organization and it has really given us as much as we have given them. It is truly amazing to see these fantastic people put their all into this rescue. We are all volunteers. None of us get paid a cent. In fact, a lot of us donate our own money to care for the dogs (as well as participate in fundraisers, etc.).
The whole reason this organization was founded was because of a girl named Tara. She loved animals and worked at a kennel. She was killed in a car accident in 2005. Her friends started this organization in her honor. How many of us can say that we have that great of friends? How many of us can say we've made that great of an impact in this world? Not too many, I'm sure. I know I haven't.
Opt to Adopt! Why breed or buy, while shelter animals die??
If you'd like more information on this organization, please leave me a note. Better yet, look for a rescue group or even a no-kill shelter in your area. They are ALWAYS in need of volunteers (you don't have to clean cages, etc.. you can donate your time or skills) and most have a long list of supplies they are in need of. When you go buy dog treats, pick up an extra box to donate. Its THAT easy!
